Pawns of the Board
Suggested age range: Kindergarten to 2nd grade
Meeting time: Saturdays 10:10 - 10:50 AM
Program description: The Story Time Chess curriculum is used to help young players learn to play chess in a group setting. Activities include reading funny stories with chess-based characters, short mini games in a group setting, and other introductory activities. The stories are educational but also hilarious; King Chomper (the White King) moves one square at a time in any direction because his pockets are full of healthy snacks. Queen Bella (the Black Queen) moves as far as she wants in any direction on the chessboard, straight or diagonal, because she is used to running around the kingdom all day.
By using characters for every chess piece and stories and activities to reinforce lessons, young beginning players are gradually introduced to the game in a fun way which doesn't overwhelm them. After completing storybooks 1-3 in this class, players may move up to the Passed Pawns of the Board curriculum.
Fee: $90/monthly* per player, auto-charged to credit card monthly (Fee includes curriculum licensing costs, so is slightly higher than programs for older players).
Addendum
For families who will be missing 2+ club meetings in a month (not just one) and send 2 days advance notice to hello[at]wayoftheboard.org, fees will be refunded on a prorated basis ($45 for 2 Saturdays, $67.50 for 3 Saturdays, $90 for 4 Saturdays).
First visit is free. When the instructor is not able to hold a class due to illness, a family schedule conflict, holidays, etc., fees will be prorated accordingly.
