Knights of the Board (Intermediate)

Overview: This group class assumes players already have familiarity with basic gameplay and rules of chess, for ideas such as castling, mate in 1, passed pawns, en passant, etc. Player should also be familiar with reading and writing chess notation (ie 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nc6 3. Qxe5+). Players who have completed Step 1 Plus in a prior class or have equivalent familiarity with the game will continue to progress their learning in this class.

Suggested age range: 3rd grade to 8th grade, although younger players may be considered after an assessment.

Meeting times: 4-5 Saturdays a month from 11:00 AM - 12:10 PM, first class on September 7th.

Fees:

  • A maximum of 16 players can be accommodated in this class.
  • Program fees are $80/monthly per player, assuming 4 Saturdays a month. When there are 5 Saturdays in a month, parents will be invoiced $20 separately for the 5th Saturday.

Curriculum:

  • Workbooks from chess-steps.com, beginning with Step 2. See infographic for description of later curriculum. Workbook progression is Step 2, Step 2 Extra, Step 2 Plus, then finally Step 2 Mixed. Players typically take one year to finish 3+ workbooks.

Addendum:

- For families who will be missing 2+ club meetings in a month (not just one) and send 2 days advance notice to hello[at]wayoftheboard.org, fees will be refunded on a prorated basis ($40 for 2 Saturdays, $60 for 3 Saturdays, $80 for 4 Saturdays). Note that fees are not refunded for single day absences.
- When the instructor is not able to hold a class due to illness, a family schedule conflict, public holidays, etc., fees will be prorated accordingly.

- Club membership can be discontinued at any time by sending an email to hello@wayoftheboard.org, and a prorated refund for that month will be issued accordingly.

- First visit is free and families can visit a class to see whether it a good fit for their chess playing child. However it is advisable to send an email in advance to ensure there is capacity for visitors and for the instructor to advise which class is likely the most appropriate.
