Product Details
Terry Kim at the Way of the Board Chess club (WOB) has 2 years of experience hosting rated and unrated chess tournaments for scholastic players of different skill levels and age groups. Terry can also host and coordinate an unrated (casual) chess tournament for Ridgefield schools and towns within 10 miles of Ridgefield, to enrich the educational experience of students while fostering a strong sense of community.
Date: To be determined by the school PTA and the Way of the Board Chess Club

Time: 6:30 - 8:00 PM (estimated end time)

Location: School cafeteria or gymnasium

Details:

The tournament will be open to students of grades 2+, possibly younger players if they know how to play the game. Players who know the basic rules of chess (how to move the pieces, how to castle, understand the concepts of check/checkmate/stalemate), know and can follow the 'no-touch rule' will be able to register for the tournament and enjoy the event. The tournament director will give a brief overview of these game rules and how to use a chess clock before the tournament rounds begin.

The tournament will use a Swiss system format, consisting of 4 rounds where each player has 10 minutes to make all moves per round. Winners will play winners and losers will play losers for each round; so by the third or fourth round players should be playing against opponents of similar ability. This event offers an excellent opportunity for students to apply critical thinking skills, learn the importance of strategy, and cultivate sportsmanship. All players will receive either a gold or silver medal, and trophies will also be awarded to players who play with distinction.

A separate section can be arranged for siblings or parents to play concurrently. Several parent volunteers are needed to help coordinate and ensure a quality experience for players.

The fee of $320 assumes 16 players each paying a $20 participation fee, and is dependent on the total number of players. Interested PTAs should send an email to hello[at]wayoftheboard.org to discuss whether a chess tournament would be of interest to the students and community.

Chess boards, pieces, and chess clocks will be provided for players. If family members will also be playing, families should bring additional chess sets.

Registration Process:

To facilitate registration, either the PTA or WOB website can be used to collect a participation fee via credit card. The suggested fee is $20 per player to cover event expenses and prizes. The fee can also be raised to contribute to the PTA's general fund.
